Micro-Practices for Mental Well-being
When we think of mental health, we often focus on the "big" shifts—major breakthroughs, life-changing realisations, or total lifestyle overhauls that can feel monumental and transformative. These significant changes are undoubtedly important and can lead to profound improvements in our overall well-being. They can provide a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of renewal that many seek on their journey towards mental wellness. However, it is equally crucial to recognise that our nervous systems are often most effectively regulated by what can be termed "glimmers": the tiny, micro-moments of peace, beauty, or safety that occur in our daily lives, often overlooked but immensely powerful in their subtlety. These glimmers serve as tiny beacons of hope and grounding that can shift our perspective, even if just for a moment.
A "glimmer" is the biological opposite of a trigger. It represents those fleeting instances that evoke a sense of comfort and joy, providing a stark contrast to the stressors that may surround us. For instance, it might be the warmth of a mug of your favourite beverage cradled between your hands on a chilly morning, the way the morning light gracefully illuminates a leaf, creating a kaleidoscope of colours that dance in your vision, or the sound of a specific song that transports you to a cherished memory filled with laughter and love. It could even be a brief moment of quiet before the world wakes up, where you can inhale deeply and feel the stillness envelop you, a serene pause in an otherwise chaotic day.
These small joys act as micro-practices for well-being, almost like tiny anchors in the turbulent sea of daily life. By consciously noticing and "savouring" them, we train our brains to look for safety and calm, helping to lower cortisol levels and build emotional resilience one small moment at a time.
This practice of mindfulness allows us to cultivate a deeper appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, which can profoundly impact our mental health, transforming our day-to-day experiences into a tapestry of positive moments that contribute to our overall emotional landscape.
How Therapy Helps
In therapy, we focus on "widening your window of tolerance." This concept refers to the range of emotions and experiences that we can manage without becoming overwhelmed. When we are stuck in a state of high stress or survival mode, we often lose the ability to notice glimmers entirely; our brains become hyper-vigilant, constantly scanning for threats and dangers in our environment.
In this heightened state, the beauty and tranquility that surrounds us can fade into the background, making it challenging to experience joy or connection. The world can seem dull and grey, stripped of its vibrancy and potential for happiness.
I help you reconnect with your senses and practice the "art of noticing" in a way that feels achievable and sustainable, allowing you to gradually expand your capacity to experience these moments of joy. This process involves developing a keen awareness of your surroundings and learning to appreciate the small details that can easily be missed amidst the noise of daily life.
We use these small joys as "anchors" during our subconscious work in therapy. By identifying and acknowledging your personal glimmers, we can integrate them into your daily routine as practical, evidence-based tools for nervous system regulation. This means that rather than waiting for a major life event to bring you happiness, you learn to cultivate joy in the present moment through these small practices.
By focusing on these micro-practices in our sessions, you build a "reservoir" of calm that you can draw upon during more difficult times. This approach transforms your mental well-being into a lived, daily experience rather than just a distant, future goal. It empowers you to take charge of your emotional landscape, fostering a sense of agency and resilience that can carry you through life’s inevitable ups and downs. In doing so, you create a foundation of stability and peace that enhances not only your mental health but your overall quality of life. This ongoing journey of self-discovery and mindfulness can lead to a richer, more fulfilling existence, where joy is not just a fleeting moment but a consistent thread woven into the fabric of your daily life.
