Finding Your "Authentic Self"

(In a World of Expectations)

What does it actually mean to "be yourself"? This profound question delves into the very essence of human existence and the intricate nature of self-identity. From the moment we enter the world, we are authentic beings—newborns epitomise pure authenticity, instinctively expressing their needs, desires, and emotions without any reservation or pretense. They cry when they are hungry, smile when they are content, and exhibit a range of emotions that are genuine and unfiltered. However, as we grow and develop, the intricate tapestry of societal norms and expectations begins to weave itself around us, often compelling us to conform to standards of acceptability that may not align with our true selves.

From a tender age, we start to adopt various personas or "masks"—such as the "good student," the "people pleaser," or the "reliable one"—in an effort to gain approval from the adults around us and to fit seamlessly into the fabric of our communities.

These masks serve a dual purpose: they help us navigate the complexities of social interactions while simultaneously shielding our vulnerable selves from perceived judgement or rejection. This process of adaptation, while sometimes necessary for social integration and survival, can lead to an overwhelming accumulation of layers that obscure our true selves. As we progress through life, these masks can become so thick and entrenched that we may lose sight of who we genuinely are beneath them, leading to a profound sense of disconnection from our authentic selves.

The concept of the "Authentic Self" is not merely a destination to be reached or a new aspect of personality to be discovered; rather, it represents an ongoing practice of peeling back the layers of conditioning that we have accumulated throughout our lives. This practice involves a deep and often challenging process of introspection, where we critically examine the "shoulds" that govern our lives—the expectations and beliefs imposed upon us by society, family, and even ourselves.

It requires us to discern which facets of our personality were constructed as protective mechanisms, to appease others, or simply to survive in a world that often demands conformity. Living in a manner that is misaligned with our true selves can be a significant source of chronic anxiety and depression; this internal conflict stems from the friction of attempting to embody a version of ourselves that is not authentic, leading to emotional turmoil, dissatisfaction, and an overarching sense of unfulfillment.

How Therapy Helps

Therapy serves as a vital process for safely peeling back those layers of conditioning that have encased our true selves. Within the therapeutic setting, I function as a reflective mirror, assisting you in distinguishing between your "survival masks"—the personas you've developed to navigate the world—and your genuine desires and feelings.

Together, we embark on a journey of exploration, delving into your core values, passions, and the unique aspects of your personality that may have been suppressed or hidden away due to external judgements that labelled them as "too loud," "too sensitive," or "too much." This exploration is not merely a surface-level inquiry; it is a deep dive into the very fabric of who you are and what you truly want from life.

Through techniques such as subconscious work, we confront and address the deep-seated fears that are often intertwined with the desire to be "seen." Many individuals harbour a profound fear that revealing their authentic selves will result in rejection, abandonment, or disapproval from others. In this therapeutic environment, I provide a safe and supportive relationship where you can practice authenticity without fear of negative consequences. We work collaboratively to silence the internalised voices of those who have dictated who you should be, empowering your own voice to become the most prominent and influential one in your life.

This alignment with your true self is where genuine confidence and inner peace are cultivated, allowing you to navigate the world with a sense of authenticity and fulfillment that had previously seemed elusive.

Ultimately, the journey towards embracing your authentic self is a profound and transformative experience. It requires courage, vulnerability, and a willingness to confront the discomfort that arises when we begin to strip away the layers of societal expectations.

As you embark on this journey, you may find that the process not only enhances your understanding of yourself but also enriches your relationships with others. By presenting your true self to the world, you invite deeper connections and more meaningful interactions, fostering a sense of belonging that transcends superficial acceptance.

In this way, the quest to "be yourself" becomes not just a personal endeavour, but a ripple effect that can inspire others to embark on their own journeys toward authenticity, creating a more genuine and compassionate world for all.
